Update on Sandbed Lane site

28th December 2020

We are pleased to report that this application has been withdrawn as of 11th December 2020.

We recently reported on our submission objecting to the planned building of 180 new dwellings on a local greenfield site. This would have seen Belper sprawl outwards across the distinctive valley slopes that surround it and have done so since the settlement began in medieval times – obliterating that landscape forever.

The applicant, Gladman Developments Ltd of Congleton withdrew the application earlier this month after Amber Valley Planning Authority had received a high number of objections on grounds ranging from landscape to traffic impacts.

This does not mean the problem has permanently gone away as Gladman may amend and re-submit the proposal. We will be keeping our eyes open on this one to ensure Amber Valley Council is held accountable to its pledge not to allow any further encroachment on the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Zone.

This after recent local uproar when the go-ahead was given on appeal for another large scale development at Belper Lane.
