Planning decisions not just about housing

Codnor Castle near Ripley is to have a new visitor centre.

In October 2020, Amber Valley planning authority granted permission for a new visitor centre at historic Codnor Castle (application reference AVA/2018/0388).

The planning application process for the sensitive heritage site took over two years, but now makes way for the castle to be regenerated and preserved for future generations.

Codnor Castle has stood on the site more than 800 years and appeared in the Channel 4 archaeological series Time Team. It was originally built by Henry De Grey, a baron who made a name for himself during the Fourth Crusade, around the year 1200.

Codnor Castle Heritage Trust sees the outcome as great news for the site. The Chair of the Trust responded to the decision:

'Codnor is a very important castle - one of the administrative centres for Sherwood Forest, which used to stretch into Derbyshire'
Rokia Brown, Chair - Codnor Castle Heritage Trust

She said the 99-year lease and new visitor centre will ‘finally enable the Trust to sustain and enhance the significance of this heritage asset’.
